I
have been working on computers in one form or another since 1992, and I
have always prided myself on providing top quality service. The main reason I sell PCs and do web development on this side is because I enjoy it. Trust me, there is very little profit in it. I have done web development to various degrees throughout my career. As a high school and college student I spent my first 8 years in I.T. as a desktop PC technician where
I built, repaired, and upgraded PCs. After college I went to work for a Fortune 100 company where I still work to this day. For the first 4 years I was a supervisor and second level support technician for the internal help desk. I was promoted to a Computer Operator postion after that, and another 4 years later I was again promoted to a Backup Administrator and Junior Unix Administrator position where I am today. I have a bachelors degree, with
honors, from the University of North
Texas (’99), the CompTIA
A+ Certification, and Microsoft
certifications in both desktop and server platforms. I am presently working on finishing my Sun Solaris certification as well.

PC Buying Tips:
Custom
built PCs are the best choice to make when buying a new PC. PCs
that are often sold in stores, from 1-800 numbers, and other such
venues typically have proprietary parts. Some examples would be Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM, eMachines, and Gateway. I refer to these systems
as “pre-built” computers.
The
reason pre-built computers don’t give you your money’s
worth is they typically do not use standard form factors. Form
factors are industry standards for PCs, which most PCs built on
assembly lines don’t follow. A very important form factor
is ATX or BTX. Building a PC to be ATX or BTX compliant means the motherboard,
case, power supply, etc… must follow very specific guidelines
so that they are all interchangeable no matter which brand component
is purchased. Pre-built computers often don’t follow this
form factor because it’s cheaper for the manufacturer to integrate as many components
on a non-standard motherboard as possible.
This
is why pre-built computers often are not very upgradeable, and
repairs can often be very expensive – if not impossible
if a proprietary replacement part is no longer made (or is too expensive
to justify the cost). With custom built PCs you never have to
worry about this. All parts are "ATX or BTX compliant" and every component
is interchangeable. This equals more upgradeability and less frustration
for you in the future.
The "pre-built" companies also often outsource their support overseas to third world countries like India and Malaysia. There you are forced to be supported by a person on the other side of the globe where the service and English are often very poor. Not to mention the fact that it's at the cost of American jobs.
It's important to get the highest quality components in your computer systems. For
example, I will only use Intel brand motherboards, Western Digital hard drives, Antec Power Supplies, etc... because
of their high quality and reliability. There are"pre-built" and custom built PCs alike that are built using cheap components. That's why it's important to check the brand of every component that goes into your PC -- not just the manufacturer who built the overall computer system. As you can see with the PCs I sell, the brand of every component is listed.
It
is very important to always compare the form factors, the brands
of components, and who will be suppporting you when deciding to buy a new PC. Service after
the sale is important. My computers have a one year warranty,
and some of the components have warranties for as much as three
years. I pride myself in giving strong support long after your
purchase. There is no better person to support your computer questions than the person who actually built your computer. I want you to go away happy, and refer me to your friends and family. |
